  1. Hurd & Wyeth: Picturing the Hondo Valley

    June 15, 2018, 9:00 AM - September 16, 2018, 5:00 PM @ Roswell Museum and Art Center

Magical & Real: Henriette and Peter Hurd, A Retrospective, is the first exhibition to explore all aspects of the careers of this artist couple-from their earliest successes in the 1920s to their late career works- and to place their work within the larger context of the 20th century American art. Co-organized with the Roswell Museum and Art Center in New Mexico, the exhibition is also the first scholarly project to probe private collections and family archives highlighting their relationships to other family members, particularly N.C. and Andrew Wyeth- and the first to evaluate their work within the broad context of the 20th century American Art. The exhibit will be on display June 15 to September 16, 2018. For more information, call the Roswell Museum and Art Center at 575-624-6744.

  7. Magical & Real Lecture Series: “The Wyeths of Chadds Ford” by Christine Podmaniczky, Curator, N.C. Wyeth Collections and Historic Properties, Brandywine River Museum of Art

    August 18, 2018, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM @ Bassett Auditorium

This illustrated lecture explores windmill and related imagery in the art of Peter Hurd. In paintings, watercolors, drawings, and even decorative arts, Hurd used windmills to demonstrate his love of landscape, and the critical importance of water in New Mexico and its environs. Punctuating the art and cultural history addressed in this illustrated lecture, a concert, performed by The Coverlets, will address the persistence of water, drought, and the vast American southwest as themes in popular music. Dr. Leo Mazow is the Louise B. and J. Harwood Cochrane Curator of American Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. His book Thomas Hart Benton and the American Sound was awarded the 2013 Eldredge Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in American Art, presented by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Since 2013, Mazow has joined vocalist Brittany Stephenson in the folk-rock duo, The Coverlets.
